Its All Arranged

Well, I got an email with my flight info from Austin to El Paso. Of course you are assuming (as did I) that they'd plop me on a Southwest Airlines direct flight. They run them all the time. But no. They've got me on Continental. In Texas, Continental's big hub is in Houston. Houston is Southeast of Austin. By about 180 miles. El Paso is a lot farther from Houston than it is from Austin. So of course that's the way I'll be going. 45 minutes to Houston. 75 minute lay-over. 60 minutes from Houston to El Paso. So what could have been about a 60 minute flight becomes a 3 hour trip.
So...this is what the next 52 weeks have in store for me...Bring it on! :-)

Oh, my email also noted that while at Fort Bliss I should be prepared to wait in long lines for "hours at a time". And that's why God invented iPods.

Andy,

I am one of Amar's older friends at Grace Covenant Church. He told me of your adventures and about your blog. So, I thought I would just wish you well and Godspeed! And since I noticed that El Paso is your next destination, I wanted to encourage you to take in the sights and wonderful climate of El Paso. I was stationed there (at the Biggs Field portion of Bliss) more than 30 years ago to learn Vietnamese. I have fond memories of my short 7 or 8 month stay in El Paso. Be sure to make it to McKilligan (SP?) Canyon, Rim Ridge Rd., and the pass across the mountain from Northwest El Paso to Northeast El Paso. Also, be sure to eat at some of the great local eateries there. Mexican food in El Paso is very different than here in Austin, but it is excellent stuff. Also try Cattlemen's steakhouse east of El Paso in the little community of Favans (sp?). Have fun!

Guy,

They booked me on Express Jet dba Contienetal Express. 2 seats on one side and 1 seat on the other. Even my carry-on bag had to be checked.
